A BALD EAGLE OVERLOOKS THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER ALONG THE
GREAT RIVER ROAD MIDWAY BETWEEN ALTON AND GRAFTON, ILLINOIS.
EAGLE FACT(S)
NOT UNTIL 1940, WHEN THE BALD EAGLE ACT WAS SIGNED, WAS THE KILLING OF BALD EAGLES IN THE
LOWER 48 STATES PROHIBITED. IN ALASKA, FROM 1917 TO 1945, AND AGAIN FROM 1949 TO 1953, A
BOUNTY OF $.50 TO $2.00 WAS PAID FOR EACH PAIR OF FEET, RESULTING IN 100,000 EAGLES BEING KILLED.
